refugee river gallery031414Refugees are not taking attempts to hold them in border wastelands lying down.  The internet is awash with pictures of refugees wading the dangerous river border between Greece and Macedonia as they try and find a future with some hope.  Meanwhile EU leaders are prepared to turn a blind eye to human rights abuses in Turkey as they prepare to offer billions of Euros to Turkey to prevent refugees leaving the country.  This can only mean more repression for refugees - already Turkey is talking about forcing refugees from the Syrian war into camps in Syria itself.  EU leaders are calling for mass deportations of refugees.  Refugees continue to make the perilous journey, despite the growing death toll in the Mediterranean.  This is a mark of the desperation they feel.

At the same time far right groups campaigning against refugees and immigrants have seen a spike in support in recent elections.  The AfD in Germany scored the best election results since any ar right organisation since WWII.  While it was not able to take power in any of the 3 regional areas it did well in it did manage to score as high as 25%.

Nazi and far-right ultra nationalist and racist parties also took almost a fifth of the seats in Slovakia’s parliament after elections on Saturday 5 March.

There is a real danger these gains will pull mainstream politics further to the right as mainstream politicians and the press escalate their attacks on refugees and migrants.   The EU referendum vote is likely to see both camps attacking migration using racist language.   Anti-racists across Europe will be taking to the streets on March 19th to oppose this racist tide.  Join us in fighting for an anti-racist Europe that welcomes refugees.
